Times are changing-Stick or Twist? #Thought4TheWeek

Times are changing-Stick or Twist? #Thought4TheWeek

Times are changing…Stick or Twist?

I type this in a hotel room in Dublin as I am attending the Global Speaking Convention 2022 conference at Croke Park, and it is hectic!

I have attached a picture of the view from our bedroom in the Croke Park Hotel - a lovely venue and the food last night was terrific!

Ok, you might say the view isn’t the most splendid but in my experience is atypical of most hotels in the centre of a city as simply there is a lot going on.

What strikes me about the picture however is something less obvious.

There is a waterway which at some point no doubt was used to haul goods around the city.

A railway line which I can attest to being used (at 7.00 am this morning!).

Plus, a walkway which seems to be a shortcut and is used increasingly not just by walkers and cyclists but electric scooters – and they are rapid!

In one simple photo, it shows that times have moved on at an ever-increasing pace in this delightful city.

Likewise eating breakfast this morning, I was struck by how many nationalities were happily mixing their food with phone calls, what’s app messages, emails etc. Everyone having an air of ‘must be somewhere and probably ten minutes ago’ and with little time for niceties…

To be fair there are some big announcements happening every day…

It would seem there are major shifts in the way we deal with economics by our government.

Jaguar Land Rover today announced a global upskilling drive, in a bid to train 29,000 people in the next three years for its connected and data capabilities and to support the rapid transition to electrification.

The company’s Future Skills Programme will see more than 10,000 Jaguar Land Rover and franchised retailer employees in the UK, and nearly 19,000 across the rest of the world trained in skills vital to electrification, digital and autonomous cars.

And much more…

Surely, we should be running around too… shouldn’t we?

What’s the point peter?

Stick or twist??

Currently, there is a lot of uncertainty in the business world which slows the whole business merry-go-round.

The temptation is to batten down the hatches, not spend, cut costs, and do what you have always done.

However, for some, it is more tempting to look to new markets and new horizons for the shortfall of businesses aware of the danger and excitement of being attracted to a shiny penny….

I wonder what our ancestors thought when they were planning new canals, new railway tracks, and new roads? Was it really that different?

The business world will always move quickly, there will always be a storm somewhere, new technologies are constantly on the horizon, and political upheavals both home and abroad will abound.

The key for any of us is to try and take a pragmatic approach.

What is working for us now?

What might also work well for us in the future?

Take some time to evaluate, stay in touch with your marketplace and take decisions when you feel right about it...

Remember gut feel will probably be right!

And then stick or twist…

It’s the game of business.
