Why are wine gums so important in business?

This week I ran a session in the Family Business Practice about the importance of wine gums.

I related the story of having a challenging day with IT issues, people issues and time pressures – in short, a tough day.

How did I relieve the stress?

I opened a pack of wine gums and munched slowly on a couple…

Now let’s be clear here that it doesn’t have to be wine gums. In fact, my personal go-to is Jelly Babies however the advantage of wine gums is they last longer. Therefore, if you decide to eat two wine gums in succession it will probably take a few minutes.

Which in most cases is exactly what is necessary to clear one’s head and be objective as opposed to blowing your stack (and believe me on the day in question it would have been easy to do!)

In the session, we split into groups and agreed on these very useful suggestions!

Take a few deep breaths

Spend time writing things down

Attempt some form of activity – take a walk, go for a swim etc

Use some well-proven self-talk

Draw or doodle

Meditate

Do a puzzle

Play some music

Talk to friends

Hug a pet

No doubt there are many more.

What’s the point, Peter?

We all have days that are stressful, and it is very easy to lose our way in pent-up steam of annoyance.

I am by no means perfect however I certainly use several of the above suggestions to do the one thing that is necessary for a situation like this… TAKE A FEW MINUTES FOR A BREATHER in some way. In whatever way floats your boat.

You will be far more likely to get things in perspective, make better decisions and be far less stressed.

Sounds like a good idea to me.

How about you?

I’m off for another wine gum ;)

I have introduced a simple tip of the week by request and this quarter it is on the most important of matters in business – TRUST.

Take note below and do look out for our new initiatives – you won’t be disappointed!
